[texts]ERIC ED204022: The Effects of Early Childbearing: A Sampler of Findings with Implications. - ERIC
More babies of very young mothers (under age 16) die, are medically at risk, and have developmental and educational difficulties than children of older, but still relatively young mothers. Because of the etiology of adolescent pregnancy, the young mother is unlikely to seek comprehensive prenatal care at the first realization of pregnancy. In addition, young mothers seldom have any educational preparation for childbearing and parenthood, since many schools do not offer courses in this area...

The effects of alcohol on the developing fetus are examined. Noted is the existence of both structural problems (such as microcephaly and cardiac anomalies) and behavioral problems (such as mental retardation and speech and language deficits). The potential damage of alcohol at a very early stage of fetal development is discussed. It is thought that children without physical signs may nevertheless have potential learning difficulties demonstrated by a wide range of performance deficits...

[texts]ERIC ED214638: Environmental Effects on Health with Special Emphasis on Neurotoxicology. Matrix No. 16. - ERIC
Environmental influences can significantly affect (both positively and negatively) the developing child. Three ways in which the environment affects the developing organism are induction, facilitation, and maintenance. In the case of induction the presence or absence of specific stimuli totally determines whether or not a particular developmental event occurs, such as sexual differentiation. Facilitation is apparent when the rate and/or maximal level of maturation is altered, as in the case of t...
